What You'll Be Doing

Job Scope: The Mechanical Technician is responsible for coordinating, organizing, and executing of mechanical activities for the pre commissioning, commissioning, and startup for new and refurbished facilities, with the aim of ensuring the systems are installed and properly commissioned ensuring plant reliability and availability is maintained per design, in line with business needs for facilities which range across multiple technologies such as Air Separation (ASU), Steam Methane reformer (HYCO), Partial Oxidation (POX), Ammonia, H2 Electrolysis, and CO2, along with ancillary equipment to support the facility.

Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Familiarity with and utilizing department design and drafting standards.

  • Recognizing and communicating project scope, specifications and design criteria upon assignment to a project task team.

  • Recognizing and communicating scope and design changes promptly.

  • On-site assistance during startup.

  • Providing technical guidance to less experienced drafting personnel in the department.

  • Coordinating work activities with other staff members and the discipline lead.

  • Producing mechanical and piping installation specifications with engineering review and approval.

  • Complete understanding of the skills and experience required to perform design functions.

  • Proactively lead and coordinate the efforts of a design staff to achieve scope, schedule and budget objectives.

  • Mentoring subordinates.

  • Participating in squad checks to insure coordination between the design disciplines.

  • Checking calculations made by other designers to ensure accuracy, conformance to codes, specifications, design criteria and conformance to good engineering practice.

  • Determining construction quantities and provide construction cost estimates.

  • Delegating work to designers in proportion to their technical skills and experience, then following up for support to ensure efficient progress and quality.

  • Consulting with design leaders from other disciplines in proportion to their technical skills and experience, then following up for support to ensure efficient progress and quality.

  • Participating in the planning of training programs, continuous education opportunities and professional development of staff.

Ideal Background

Education: Associate degree in Engineering Technology or Computer-Aided Drafting is required.

Certification: SPED (Society of Piping Engineers and Designers) Certification is preferred.

Experience: Requires 8 or more years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical/piping drafting and design.

  • Demonstrated technical and practical engineering skills with a good business sense in the maintenance field

  • Proven coordination experience in a multi team environment which includes engineering, maintenance, and contractors.

  • Good leadership, interpersonal and teamwork skills with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

  • Strong oral and written skills with the ability to communicate maintenance activities to the ASU management team daily.

  • Knowledge of computer-based applications (Microsoft Office) and a working knowledge of an ERP system (SAP knowledge a plus)

  • Proven problem-solving skills

  • Knowledge of the construction and maintenance of large and complex rotating equipment (e.g. compressors, turbines, pumps, expanders), pressurized systems, pipe and welding techniques, and electrical equipment and systems

  • Must have experience in commissioning, project work, plant operations and maintenance efforts

  • Proficiency in English speaking and writing.

  • Knowledge and understanding of local environmental and health and safety requirements.

  • Demonstrated leadership and decision-making skills are critical to the position.

  • Knowledge of vendor contracts and knowledge of shop support in the region is desirable

  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time.
